The decision this session forces
The gap is never knowledge. It is the distance between knowing and doing, and it is the whole of what separates two people with the same mind, the same skills and the same schooling.
The short version
- Everybody knows what to do. The difference is how fast one of them implements it.
- An idea that has not been built in the real world is a wish.
- Action orientation is not haste. Weigh it, decide on the probability of improvement, make it measurable, then ship the smallest version. One conversation with a customer beats a month of planning.
- A manager who does not know himself sells his own likes and fears to the company as its needs.
- Situational awareness is mostly listening. Whether your juniors feel safe disagreeing with you decides whether you ever hear anything true.
- Presence is credibility, explaining a complex thing simply, discipline under pressure, and a character that does not change by the day. That is what a personal brand actually is.
- A manager absorbs pressure and returns direction. Forwarding the stress downwards is not managing.
- Intuition is not a gift. It is the same pattern seen enough times, and it only forms inside your own trade.
- Run a test small enough to walk back from.
The knowing–doing gap
Two people, same mind, same skills, same schooling. One builds a working life. The other spends his best years waiting for a better opportunity and for his preparation to feel complete.
The difference is not information. Both of them know. The difference is how quickly one of them turns what he knows into something that exists.
Nobody is complete or perfect, which is why waiting until you feel ready is a decision to wait for ever. An idea that has not been implemented is a wish with a good vocabulary.
Five planks across it
Action orientation. Knowledge turned into a plan somebody can execute. Not haste — the pros and cons weighed, the decision taken on the probability of improvement, and the result measurable. Then the smallest version that can be shown to a real customer.
Self-awareness. Your strengths, your weaknesses, your values, and what actually triggers you. Without it you will present your own preferences to the organisation as its requirements, and be entirely sincere about it.
Situational awareness. The culture, the market, the timelines, the people. Mostly it is listening. The specific thing to find out is whether the people below you feel safe objecting — if they do not, you are the last person to learn anything is wrong.
Presence, and the thing under it
Does your being in the room add anything to it. That is credibility, plus the ability to explain a complicated thing simply, plus emotional discipline when the pressure arrives, plus a character that is the same on a bad day.
The test of it is what happens to pressure. A manager takes it and returns strategy and direction. Passing the stress down the line unchanged is not a management style; it is the absence of one.
Intuition sits on top of all of it and cannot be hurried. It is the same patterns seen enough times, in your own trade, with honest feedback. Outside your trade you do not have it, whatever it feels like.
Goals, and the size of a first attempt
Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound. And connected to the larger thing you are doing, or the work will exhaust you regardless of how well it goes.
Then the limited test: an experiment small enough that being wrong costs you little and you can walk back from it. It is the same rule the profitable-life session reaches by another road.
The closing frame was one line. See yourself as an asset and you stop wasting yourself. Invest yourself the way you would invest anything else you owned.
